Spring Term 1 (2023-2024)

Monday 5th February – Friday 9th February 2024

What an amazing end to Term 3 we have had in Year 1.

This week began our new journey in Maths looking at measurement, considering longer than and shorter than for lengths, along with continuing to develop our knowledge in partitioning 16.

In Literacy we have been busy completing our Non-Chronological reports, including publishing them for our new display.  We are so excited for you to read and see these at parents evening next term.

We finished our journey in Art by doing a drawing inspired by the styles and techniques of Julian Opie.

We had some special visitors this week, two PCSO’s, talking to us about internet safety and how to be safe online.

As part of Mental Health Awareness and Wellness week, we have been looking how the act of giving positively impacts us, as well as the person we share a gift with.  For this, we made daffodils for members of staff, with a thank you note for something they do.  They staff were so pleased to get these, and we all felt amazing too! The children asked to make some for home too, so we hope these flowers brighten your homes over the coming weeks too! Alongside this, we have read ‘Speak Up!’ and learnt about the importance of speaking up in lots of different situations, we had fun making paper cup telephones.

Exercise can greatly improve our moods, and we have been exploring moving our bodies can help make us feel better – we have enjoyed Dance, Hockey and Cricket this week.

Year 1, along with the rest of the school, took part in the Lent Retreat which was a beautiful time of reflection in the lead up to Lent.

I hope you and your families have a wonderful half term break, don’t forget to keep reading, you can still earn reading points over a half term holiday.

Monday 29th January – Friday 2nd February 2024

This week St. Joseph’s class have been enjoying continuing our ‘Exploration of the Nation’ learning, and discovering what human and physical features attract people to the United Kingdom – thank you to those who have been able to send in photos from visits you have had around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, our display board map is inspiring lots of conversations from the children’s coastal visits to the countryside stops to their city sightseeing.

In Maths we have been partitioning 14 and 15, looking at addition and subtraction facts of these numbers.

In English we have continued on our journey writing non-chronological reports, which I am hoping the children will be publishing for our display board in the coming weeks.

In Year 1 we value our friendships and have been discussing who makes up our ‘Super Squad’ in RSHE.  Recognising our class as a ‘Super Squad’ we have been working together in pairs in Physical Education to explore travel in dance, and playing in pairs and teams for our hockey skills.

Our imaginations have been ignited from the first few chapters of our class book, Zoey and Sassafras, and the children have started making trampolines, tightropes, stages for a ‘Bug Circus’ in our REACH activity.

Developing our musical rhythm we have playing instruments and finding the beat to songs.

Blog Post 8th-12th January 2024

What a busy and exciting week we have to start our term.

In maths we have been working on our 3D shapes, along with naming and learning the properties of these shapes we have been seeing what creations we make with them.

We celebrated becoming part of the Little Ways Educational Trust in so many different ways, donating cereal boxes and creating a huge dominoes with them, making books marks, decorating our own class banner with vegetable printing, planting some broad beans in our garden ready to invite our partner class to enjoy the harvest in late spring/early harvest, enjoying a video chat with this class where we learnt almost all the children at that school walk, bike or scooter to school! Finally, we all enjoyed some delicious cake.

During our RE lessons we acted out the annunciation in pairs.

For PE as well as practising some football skills, we also did some mindful balancing, where we thought how we could balance in difference positions and using different points of contact.

We have spent time reflecting on what being a good friend looks and sounds like, and continued work on our Literacy journey of Contemporary Stories. We have also been taking our learning outside.
