Spring term 2 2026

Week commencing 23.3.26

What an amazing week we’ve had in Year 6! It’s been full of learning, teamwork, reflection, and plenty of fun. Here’s a look back at some of the activities that we managed to pack in.

SkillZONE Trip – Independence in Action

Our afternoon at SkillZONE in Gloucester was absolutely brilliant! The children were superb representatives of our school and really demonstrated our REACH values throughout the visit. We were especially proud when the class scored 100% on the final safety quiz – a fantastic achievement. Even in just an afternoon, the sessions at SkillZONE gave the children valuable opportunities to build confidence and independence, especially as they prepare for secondary school. It was wonderful to see everyone engaging so thoughtfully.

House Singing – Voices Raised with Pride

House Singing was another highlight this week. We are so proud of all our Year 6 pupils, especially our House Captains, most of year 6 worked tirelessly to organise, encourage, and lead their teams. From lunchtime rehearsals to practising at home, their dedication really shone through. Every house performed brilliantly, and it was clear how much effort everyone had put in.

Stations of the Cross – A Moment to Reflect

On Friday, we spent time reflecting on the Stations of the Cross – a quiet and thoughtful opportunity to consider Jesus’ suffering and the true meaning of Easter. Year 6 approached this with real maturity and respect.

REACH Treat – Wheelie Fun!

To finish the week, we enjoyed our REACH treat: Wheelies! Even though it was a little busy, everyone had great fun zooming around. We did miss the members of our class who were poorly – we hope you’re all feeling much better soon.

Happy Easter!

Wishing all our children and families a very happy Easter and a restful break. Please remember to keep reading over the holidays, and for those who ordered the SATS 10 minute workbooks – these have been sent home and are ready to be used.

Rest up, recharge, and be ready… because next term is going to be another action‑packed adventure!

Week commencing 16.3. 26

What a wonderful and purposeful week we’ve had in Year 6! The children have continued to show resilience, curiosity, and a determination to meet the high expectations we set for them. Here’s a look at everything we’ve been up to.

Design Technology – Final Designs Complete!

We’ve finished our final DT designs, and the creativity on display has been incredible. The children approached challenges with real confidence, adapting their ideas when needed and showing great aspiration in their plans. We’re excited to start making these next term — children may need to gather a few items from home to help bring their unique designs to life.

RE – Exploring Sin, Heaven and Hell

In RE, we delved into the concept of sin from a Catholic point of view and discussed what heaven and hell truly mean in Catholic teaching. The class handled the topic with maturity and empathy, showing sensitivity when exploring different beliefs and ideas. Their thoughtful reflections led to rich discussions.

Science – Darwin-Inspired Bird Beak Investigations

Our science lesson took inspiration from Darwin’s research into adaptation. Using different tools to represent bird beaks, the children explored which was best adapted for collecting rice. It was hands-on, fascinating, and a brilliant opportunity for the class to show resilience when experiments didn’t go to plan the first time!

Outdoor Learning – Understanding Our World

We headed outside in beautiful weather to deepen our understanding of how countries and continents are represented across different maps. Working together outdoors gave the children a chance to develop cooperation, patience, and empathy as they discussed different perspectives of the world.

PE – Gymnastics & Cricket

Gymnastics with Ali: We focused on symmetrical and asymmetrical balances, building confidence as pupils worked with partners to create controlled and imaginative shapes.

Cricket with Eric: Our week ended with a fantastic cricket session. Teamwork, encouragement, and positivity were front and centre — a great example of how we support each other and show our high expectations in both effort and behaviour.

English – Explanation Texts & Letter Writing

We completed our machine explanation texts and applied our skills to letter writing. Both tasks required careful structure and clarity, and the children showed real aspiration in improving the quality of their writing. These are valuable life skills, and Year 6 rose to the challenge.

Maths – Important Life Conversions

This week we tackled practical conversions:

  • metres ↔ kilometres
  • grams ↔ kilograms
  • millilitres ↔ litres
  • and time

These can be tricky, but with perseverance and resilience, the class made impressive progress. Their confidence is growing with each session.

Music – Songwriting Workshop with Kevin Howlett

We had the exciting opportunity to take part in a songwriting workshop led by Kevin Howlett. He shared stories from his career, performed songs, and guided us through the songwriting process. The children showed enthusiasm and confidence, and many left feeling inspired by what creativity can lead to.

From creativity in DT to deep thinking in RE, practical problem-solving in maths, and collaboration in PE, Year 6 have shown a beautiful blend of aspiration, empathy, confidence, resilience, and high expectations.  We’re incredibly proud of them — bring on the last week of term!

Week commencing 9.3.26

What an amazing week we’ve had in Year 6! Every single day has been packed with learning, creativity, teamwork and new experiences. Here’s a look back at everything we got up to…

Monday – BBC Live Science Assembly, DT Designs & Mock Trials

We started with a fantastic Science Week assembly, streamed live from the BBC! It linked perfectly to our learning about light in Year 6 and space from Year 5. Seeing real scientists talk about the topics we’ve studied made everything feel extra exciting and meaningful.

In DT, we worked on three annotated design ideas for our pulley‑controlled vehicles, planned specially for our Reception buddies. Everyone came up with imaginative, thoughtful designs—it felt like we were real engineers.

We ended the day with more mock trial practice. We’re growing in confidence every session, trying out new roles, developing clear questioning and speaking with authority.

Tuesday – Thinking Deeply in RE & PE

Tuesday was a “normal day”… but still full of great learning.
In RE, we explored the idea of conscience—how we make choices about right and wrong, and what we mean by a sin. The discussions were thoughtful, sensible and mature.

PE was all about sequencing movements and shapes. We used the equipment brilliantly and really focused on how to combine actions smoothly. Some routines were impressively creative!

Wednesday – Shared Writing & Science Week Workshop

On Wednesday, we worked on a shared write for our explanation texts about made-up machines. The ideas were incredibly imaginative —from problem‑solving robots to machines that could make life easier in surprising ways – the Mum-Pleaser Machine was great! Our explanations were detailed, logical and fun to read.

In the afternoon, we watched a Science Week workshop all about AI and electronic vehicles. Perfect timing for our technology focus this term!

Thursday – STEM Day: Brush Monsters!

Thursday was one of the highlights of the week: our STEM Day!
We created brush monsters—vibrating mini‑robots that scuttle around. It was extremely enjoyable, and the whole class showed brilliant listening and teamwork with the adults helping us. Everyone was so excited to take home their finished models!

Friday – The Big Mock Trial!

All our hard work led up to today: the final mock trial. We didn’t win the case—the defendant was found not guilty—but we did receive some fantastic feedback. One of the magistrates told us our performance was excellent and in the top half of all the schools he’d seen. We’ll find out the official results next week, but we already feel proud of what we achieved - it was a very aspirational performance. A huge thank you to Marianne’s dad, Marmaduke’s mum and Emilia’s dad for helping with lifts. We really appreciate your support.

We are so lucky to have had such a varied, exciting week full of new experiences.
Now it’s time to rest up, recharge, and get ready for everything next week has in store!

Week commencing 2.3.26

Year 6 have had a fantastic second week back, full of thoughtful discussions, creativity and teamwork across many subjects. It has been wonderful to see the children demonstrating our key values of confidence, high expectations, empathy, resilience and aspiration throughout their learning.

In DT, the children worked in pairs to design and create mini prototypes. It was great to see such positive collaboration as they measured carefully and used tools responsibly. The paired work encouraged the children to support each other, showing both empathy and resilience as they tested ideas and improved their designs while aiming for high expectations in the quality of their work.

Our Peacemakers session focused on the idea of respect. We discussed whether it is possible to respect someone even if we do not agree with them. After some thoughtful conversation, the class unanimously agreed that it is possible. This was a powerful discussion that showed the children’s growing empathy and their ability to listen carefully and value different perspectives.

In PE, we had our second gymnastics session with Ali Dixon. The children continued working on the large blue apparatus and showed increasing confidence when using the springboard for their jumps. Many challenged themselves to try new movements, demonstrating both resilience and aspiration as they pushed themselves to improve.

During RE, the class created beautiful prayer cards based on the Sorrowful Mysteries. We linked this to the season of Lent and discussed how this time encourages reflection, compassion and hope. The children approached this activity thoughtfully and with great care.

In Science, we explored Darwin’s finches and how their beaks adapted to different environments. The children showed great curiosity and aspiration as they asked thoughtful questions, preparing for the experiment we will be carrying out next week.

Thursday was World Book Day, which we celebrated with lots of reading, some hot chocolate, and work based on Bloomby Anne Booth. The children wrote compliment letters to someone positive in their lives. Many chose to write to one another, which was a lovely way to show kindness and empathy within our class community.

In English, we have been focusing on explanation texts, particularly using bullet points and hyphens effectively. The children worked hard to meet our high expectations as they prepared for writing their own explanation texts next week.

Finally, in Maths, we have been learning about ratio and scale drawings – two mathematical concepts that are very useful in the everyday world. The children approached these new ideas with confidence and resilience, showing determination as they practised and refined their skills.

It has been a brilliant week in Year 6, and we are looking forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!

Week commencing 23.2.26

It has been a very busy and exciting first week back for Year 6!

Awe and Wonder Week

This week, we have been taking part in our special Awe and Wonder Week, with four lessons linked to Judaism and inspiring ideas created by Jewish people.

In Computing, we explored the history of Google and discovered that its co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are Jewish. This led us to an important discussion about our digital footprint. We thought carefully about what we post online, how long information stays there, and how our online actions can affect our futures. The children had some very thoughtful and mature reflections about staying safe and positive online.

In Science, we learned about Rosalind Franklin and her crucial role in the discovery of DNA. We were fascinated to learn how her work helped scientists understand the structure of DNA and how important her contribution was to modern science. It was inspiring to hear about her perseverance and dedication to her research.

During our RE lesson, we learned about Shabbat and how it compares to the Catholic Sabbath. The class were particularly shocked to discover that during Shabbat, many Jewish families do not use electronics for 25 hours! We discussed how this special time is used for rest, prayer, family and reflection, and we compared it to how Catholics observe Sunday as a day of rest and worship.

In Art, we explored typography and the work of Jewish artist El Lissitzky. We looked at how he used bold shapes, strong lines and striking layouts in his designs. The children then experimented with their own typography, thinking carefully about composition and visual impact.

Spreading Joy

We also had a wonderful time helping our Reception buddies celebrate Mardi Gras on the playground. It was lovely to see Year 6 showing such kindness, responsibility and enthusiasm as they supported and celebrated with the younger children.

Gymnastics Success

To top off a fantastic week, we completed our first gymnastics lesson with Ali Dixon. The highlight for many of us was getting to try the springboard for the very first time! The children showed great bravery, determination and excellent listening skills.

What a fantastic start to the term – we are already looking forward to another brilliant week ahead!

I've also attached our final art pieces from last term - these are fabulous!
