Spring Term 1 2026

Week beginning 26th January 2026
What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 1! The children continue to impress us with their enthusiasm, kindness, and determination as we move into the middle of our term. They are really settling into routines beautifully and giving their very best in every lesson.

This week in maths, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction sentences. The children explored the number bonds of 15 and 16, using practical resources and pictorial representations to deepen their understanding. They are becoming much more confident in recognising the different pairs of numbers that fit together to make these totals.

In Computing, we have been continuing to develop our fine motor skills while using digital tools. This week, our artwork was inspired by Henri Matisse, particularly his use of spirals in his famous snail themed pieces. The children used a range of tools on the computer to recreate spiral patterns, practising control, accuracy, and creativity.

In RE, we learned about the hidden life of Jesus when he was a child, and we reflected on how his early life compares to our own. The children loved exploring the story of when Jesus went missing and was later found in the temple after three days. To help retell the story, we created our own puppets, which made for some wonderful, thoughtful discussions and storytelling.
Week beginning 19th January 2026

This week in RE, the children have been learning about Jesus visiting the temple with Mary and Joseph, where he met Simeon and Anna and was blessed. We talked about what it means to be blessed and to care for others. The children then created their own “Bless You” cards and thoughtfully wrote prayers for people they would like God to watch over.

In computing, we explored the work of the artist Piet Mondrian. The children used the square and fill tools on Paintz.app to create artwork inspired by Mondrian’s style, focusing on shapes and primary colours. They showed great creativity while developing their digital art skills.
Week beginning the 12th January 2026

This week, the children have had a fantastic time learning and exploring. They have continued their computing journey by using Paintz.app, where they explored a range of tools to create digital artwork and express their creativity.

In Maths on Track (MOT), we have been focusing on number facts up to 16. The children used part part whole models and counters to partition numbers and confidently wrote number sentences on their whiteboards, demonstrating a secure understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and recombined.
Week beginning the 5th January 2026

The children have had a fantastic start to the new term and have settled beautifully back into Year 1 after the Christmas holidays. It has been lovely to see them return refreshed, enthusiastic, and ready for learning. Their positive attitude has really shone through in every lesson. This week in History, we have been learning about toys from the past. The children created brilliant posters describing how they could tell whether a toy was old or new, using clues such as materials, colours, and how the toys move.

On Friday, the classroom was transformed into our very own toy museum. The children brought in toys from home and combined them with some of our older school toys to create displays. They were so proud to share their collections, and their excitement grew even more when Reception came to visit and explore the museum. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to talk confidently about their toys and the history behind them.

In RE, we have been learning about Our Lady Mary and why she is so important to many people around the world. We explored how Mary is honoured in different countries and discussed what a pilgrimage is. The children learned about traditions such as saying the rosary, lighting candles, and offering flowers. To celebrate Mary, the children made their own beautiful paper flowers and designed a special crown for Mary, thinking carefully about colours, patterns, and symbols that would show love and respect.
