Year 5 blog

We have had the most exciting Thursday EVER! As part of the Royal International Air Tattoo, we had a virtual STEM day about rockets. This tied in really nicely with our science topic of Space! To start with, we learned what STEM meant (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). We watched videos about rockets and we learned about the different parts of a rocket. We designed our own rockets and then built prototypes of them. Finally, we launched them! We had to use a lot of confidence and resilience as some of the rockets didn't work first time!
We have entered a competition to win tickets to the RIAT so watch this space!

This week has also been an important week as it is Little Way week. This is where we join with our Trust schools to celebrate the feast day of our patron Saint; St Therese of Lisieux. We did posters with a nice picture on to go into our local community. We also made flowers with our intention of act of kindness in the middle. Do check out our video on our facebook page!

We are just about to go to the Year 3 Macmillan cake sale- perfect end to a Friday!

In gardening, we were really lucky to be given 11 raspberry canes. We planted them in our beds so we will have plenty of raspberries next year. We were also lucky that Jake's Dad volunteered some time to fix one of our raised beds and fix our leaning apple trees! Without parental help and donations, our garden would just be weeds!

In PE we learned a really tricky skill: step overs. A few of us (Austin, Julia, James and Elliot) could do them already so Mrs Carr used us to help teach the others. It is a really tricky skill to master and we have another lesson this week to practice them. But we all showed lots of resilience which will help us learn the skills faster.

In Art, we learned how to mark make with confidence over a busy background. We cut pictures out from "First News" and then used felt tips to create our own font over the top. Mrs Carr says they look really impressive!

On Friday it was European day of Languages! We had an assembly on it, and then did some activities. Our homework was the Great French challenge! We really loved it.

In our Peacemakers session we played lots of fun games and learned how to resolve little conflicts ourselves. We are using it independently now which is making our classroom more harmonious!

Next week is Little Way week so we can't wait to tell you all about that!

Mrs Carr Blog

We have had such an amazing week doing all sorts of things, but I really want to take this blog space to tell you all about the huge progress Year 5 have made in week 2!

We have been focusing on independence and group work this week, with SO much success. The children are learning to use our working walls, knowledge organisers and sticky knowledge to help them with their learning. It has been wonderful to watch them be so confident and have such high expectations of themselves.

I hope you enjoy the photos of Year 5 being the absolute best they can be!

Year 5 blog

Welcome to Year 5! We have got so much to tell you about our first week and a half at school!

Firstly, we are now in charge of the garden area. Last Friday, we picked our beds and planned what we wanted to grow in them. This year, we are going to grow different things to last year and see what works well. The weather isn't helping us very much at the moment, but we hope to get out today and get some harvesting and weeding done!

In Art, we have been looking at Typography- which is how things are written. We got to look at lots of different fonts and had a go at drawing some ourselves.

In RE, we have been studying Moses and how he showed great faith in God. We have looked at the Burning bush and the 10 Commandments.

In Science, we are learning about the Solar system. Our Sticky Knowledge from that lesson is: The sun is in the centre of the Solar System. We remember that REALLY well!

In Maths, we have been learning about 5 digit numbers. We have been looking at the value of the digits, as well as reading and writing them in numerals and words. Numerals means numbers!

In PE, we have been looking at football skills. Again, the weather hasn't helped us very much but we hope we are going to get out today!

We are the class of FIRSTS this year, and we started off with a visit from The Peacemakers. This is a new PSHE scheme we are trialling in school and we are the FIRST class to try it out. We did circle time activities to discuss what Peace means and we played some games. We all really enjoyed it!

As you can see, we have been SUPER busy but we are REACH-ing in everything we do!
See you next week!
