Week beginning 29th September 2025
This week in Year 1, the children have grown in confidence as they embraced new challenges with high expectations, showing love for learning and hope in their ability to succeed.
In computing the children continued learning how to use a keyboard and mouse, building on their understanding of basic digital skills. We used paintz.app to practise using the touchpad, where the children explored different tools and colours to create digital self-portraits. It was a brilliant opportunity for them to express themselves creatively while becoming more confident with technology.
This week, the children explored how to take ownership of their artwork by creating their own elastic band sketchbooks. Using a range of papers, they personalised each one, making it a space for their creativity. It has been wonderful to see them proudly bringing these back, filled with imaginative and thoughtful creations.
In maths we have been focusing on identifying and naming 2D shapes. The children have been using their ‘sticky knowledge’ to prove their learning, confidently explaining how they know which shape is which. We even took our learning outside, using objects to model our understanding of shapes in the real world.
Week beginning 22nd September 2025
This week, the children have been busy exploring creativity, faith, and technology. In Art, they made their own elastic band sketchbooks and began filling them with imaginative creations. In RE, they looked closely at the Lord’s Prayer, choosing favourite parts to model with playdough. In Computing, they practised using laptop keyboards and enjoyed typing their names into text boxes using Paintz.app. It’s been a joyful and hands-on week of learning!

In RE this week, the children explored the meaning of the Lord’s Prayer, focusing on each key section. They chose their favourite part and represented it creatively using playdough, making models such as apples, rainbows, snakes, and the earth.
In Computing, the children explored how to use a laptop keyboard, learning about important keys like Enter, Space, and Caps Lock. They then used Paintz.app to create a text box and typed their own names, practising their keyboard skills and enjoying seeing their names appear on the screen.

In English we have been retelling the story of Mr Pig, using actions to help us remember key parts of the story. The children have really enjoyed acting out the story and are beginning to use the conjunction ‘and’ to extend their sentences in their writing. Their enthusiasm for storytelling has been wonderful to see!

In RE, we explored the theme of God’s creation and how it makes us feel. We shared the beautiful story This I Know by Clay Anderson, which helped us reflect on the wonder of the world around us. The children thoughtfully chose their favourite image from the book and used watercolours to paint their own interpretations. It was a peaceful and expressive activity that encouraged awe and appreciation for nature.

In Art, we continued our exploration of spirals. Using oil pastels, the children experimented with smudging techniques and pressure—pressing hard and soft—to see how it changed the effect. They then created their very own spiral artworks, each one unique and full of energy.
In Maths, we began using Mastering Number to deepen our understanding of number bonds to 5. The children enjoyed working with die frames and double-sided counters to explore number structures in a hands-on way. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they began to recognise patterns and relationships between numbers.
Week beginning 8th September 2025
This week in Year 1, the children have truly embodied our school values of being confident and aspirational. They have shown incredible resilience across all areas of learning, tackling new challenges with enthusiasm and determination. Whether working independently or collaborating with their peers, they have demonstrated a positive attitude and a growing sense of pride in their achievements. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence flourish and their aspirations shine through in everything they do.

In our REACH activity this week, we delved into the fascinating world of microbes. The children were surprised to learn that not all microbes are harmful—some are actually helpful, like those found in yoghurt and bread! We explored three types of microbes: fungi, bacteria, and viruses, and the children used clay to create imaginative models of each one. Their curiosity and creativity made this a truly memorable learning experience.
During PE, we focused on developing memory and coordination through sequence activities. The children worked in pairs to tap coloured cones in the correct order, responding to their partner’s calls. This fun and active task helped them build concentration, teamwork, and physical control. It was lovely to see them encouraging one another and celebrating their successes together.

In RE, we explored the Creed and its importance to the Catholic faith. The children showed great thoughtfulness as they discussed each part of the Creed and what it means to believers. They created beautiful, symbolic drawings to represent the different sections and reflected on how these words connect to their own understanding of God. Each child also carefully wrote out the Creed, demonstrating both reverence and pride in their work. It was a meaningful and creative way to deepen their understanding of Catholic beliefs.
Week beginning the 1st September 2025
What a Fantastic First Week Back in Year 1!
We are so proud of how brilliantly the children have settled back into school this week. They have returned with such a positive attitude and a real eagerness to learn. It’s a big step moving from Reception to Year 1, but they have handled the transition with confidence and enthusiasm. They have shown our school value of high expectations in everything they do, and their resilience has been amazing to see. They should be very proud of themselves — we certainly are!
In Maths, we have been exploring the structure of numbers up to 20. The children have been using tens frames and 100 squares to help them build strong number sense and spot patterns in numbers. It has been lovely to see them explaining their thinking and growing in confidence with their number work.
During PE, we have been developing our balance, coordination, and teamwork skills. The children took on the exciting challenge of crossing a “river” using lily pads — but each time they crossed, it got trickier! They had to carry different objects like beanbags and footballs without dropping them or stepping into the river. It was all about working together, thinking carefully, and encouraging one another — and they did a brilliant job!
