Spring 1 2026

Week beginning 9th February 2026

Year 5 Blog

It is the end of a really busy half term and we had our treat today! We got to bring in teddies from home and painted them. Not the ACTUAL teddies...we painted their portraits!

This week has been a week of finishing off!
Firstly, we finished off our Monotype print books which are currently drying before we take them home after half term. This was a really fun project!

Secondly, we finished off our geometry topic by looking at mirror lines. We have done our Remember it and are ready for our new topic after Half Term.

Lastly, we have (sadly) finished our topic on the rainforest. This has been our most inspirational topic yet; we learned so much about the rainforest! We have written letters about the rainforest and why we should protect it, and done a supermarket sweep for rainforest safe products! It really has been an amazing topic but we are looking forward to our next history topic.

In English, we have been looking at semi colons (have you spotted us use one in the blog?) to make our sentences more advanced.  We have already been using them in as many subjects as we can!! We have still a few more lessons to go on our persuasive writing topic!

As the weather has been so miserable, we have struggled to do much outside PE (but our inside PE has been great!)
We really hope that the weather will sort itself out over half term!

See you next term!

Year 5 Blog

In Maths, we have been looking at co-ordinates, translation and reflection. We have learned about how to plot co-ordinates to make shapes, how to reflect them over a mirror line and how to move them using translation.

In art, we have been making a poetry book using monotype printing and our previous skill of typography. We are hoping to finish them next week!

In RE, we looked at the Our Father prayer and we learned that it has 7 petitions!

In English, we have started looking at formal persuasive letters. We learned that persuasive letters change minds!

In Dance, we had a practice before we show the Year 3's next week. We showed our dances to each other and then we had a mystery guest appear.... who also watched our dances and did a Just Dance with us too! Can you guess who it was?

On Friday, we had the school disco! We had a dance off with Mrs Howells- it was so much fun!

On Thursday, some of us represented our school in a swimming gala. We did really well and represented our school well.

Last week of term next week, I think we are all ready for a break!
Week beginning26th January

Year 5 blog

We want to tell you all about our DT Friday!

Our objective was to make a semi- permanent structure. We all achieved the objective!
Elliot- it was very hard, but we used our confidence to carry on
Julia- sometimes things didn't really work, especially with the glue gun! But we had lots of resilience so we tried again.
Evie- We used lots of paint and it covered the table! The classroom was a mess but we all worked together to tidy it up!
Bea- All of our buildings came out amazing and unique!
Lucy- We managed to find clay which we used on our structures.
Molly- We had mirrors and tape which we could use.
Ginny- If we saw anyone who was struggling, we helped them using our empathy value. We also encouraged our friends!
Ella- We used cardboard to make the structures, and then we used any other supplies to make extra bits.
Callum- they all came out in different sizes; some were big, some were small, some were wide.
Bella- Sometimes things wouldn't work out so we had to see what different materials we could use.
Eliza- We didn't need any adult support- we did it all ourselves!
Amberlee- if one way didn't work, there was always another!

Mrs Carr gave us all a REACH point for our attitude, concentration and tidying up!

We did have some other lessons too!

In English we looked at spoken word poems. We looked at "Walking with my Iguana" which was very funny! We had a go at writing our own too!

In dance, we are doing really well making dances in our own groups. At the start of each lesson we have been taking inspiration from Just dance to create carnival inspired dances. We are going to show Y3 at some point!

In RSHE, we are starting a new topic about "is God calling you"

Next week we are SUPER busy...but you'll have to wait until Friday to find out what we have been up to!
Week beginning 19th January 2026

Year 5 blog

The biggest news we want to share is about our Knex challenge on Wednesday. It was a really fun competition where we worked in partners to complete a build. We had to see which parts worked and which parts didn't work: problem solving! The winner is invited to the final at Renishaw soon!
We had to build a mini factory to store products and we had to have shelves and robots. This was inspired by the Amazon warehouses that were fully automated. We had to demonstrate how the robot part of our warehouse worked.

In Maths, we have been finishing off our long multiplication and have just started our long division. It is a bit tricky for some people because we've gone from multiplying to dividing but we are showing our amazing resilience to tackle the challenge!

In RE, we were comparing how Moses and Jesus linked and we were also linking the 10 commandments and the Beatitudes. Which Beatitude do you think is the most important?

In RSHE we have been looking at our emotions. It is really helpful!

In Science, we have started our new topic on lifecycles. We have been looking at the life cycle of a mammal and a bird! Next week it is insect and amphibian!

See you next week!
Week beginning 12th January 2026

Mrs Carr blog

I could write reams and reams about what we did in the week, but instead I am going to let the pictures do the talking!

The children have been hard working, focussedresilient and inquisitive- but with such a lovely fun flair too!
We have had so much fun capturing special moments of laughter, concentration and performance- I hope you like the pictures! The science pictures were taken by Year 5 themselves, who wanted to capture their own record of the lesson! I absolutely love the smiles!

Normal blog will be resumed on Friday :)

Happy New Year!

What a start to 2026! We came back on Tuesday to a light dusting of snow! Very exciting!

We have started 2026 with some really tricky Maths! We have started our work on long multiplication! It is quite hard but once we know the steps, we will be super confident. For now though, we are being very resilient!

We have started a new topic: Rainforests. To help us, we have got a programme to watch each Geography lesson about people visiting the rainforest and the Achuar tribe. It will help us understand more about the rainforest and why it is so important to protect it.

Not only is it a new calendar year and a new school term but for one of us, its a brand new school! We have welcomed Evie into our class family! We are very excited to have you!

In PE, we have started hockey. We have had a hockey assessment to show Mrs Carr what we can do- and we are moving onto defending next week.

We are also focusing on "a" and "o" in handwriting to help us form our words correctly. We must remember that we join a from the bottom and o from the top!

Finally, in English we are doing instructions. We are learning about imperative verbs and how to structure them correctly.

We have started a new class book called "Asha and the Spirit bird". It is full of cliff hangers and Mrs Carr loves leaving us on really good ones. So, we are going to leave you on one too!

Next week, we will be doing.......
