Who is St Joseph?
St Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St Joseph of Nazareth lived a life which was filled by faith. He was a righteous man. Joseph was chosen by God as a trustworthy guardian and protector of Mary and Jesus. Joseph spent his life working very hard as a carpenter. Joseph was happy to work to provide for his family. Joseph always showed a great commitment to God, and did as the Lord wanted him to do, no matter how difficult it was. He was humble, gentle and wise.

Routines in Year 1
- Saint Joseph's homework will be set on a Friday, this will include: Spellings-These will need to be practised at home ready for a test every Thursday. Reading, Writing and Maths homework will also be on alternate weeks. This will need to be completed and sent back in on the following Wednesday.
- Once per term, the children will also have Religious Education Homework.
- P.E will happen every Tuesday and Friday- Please come to school in your P.E kit.
- Reading at home is very important for all children. Children will be rewarded with a reading point if they have read at home five times per week.
- Each week a child will bring home our Class Prayer Bag. Within the bag you will find a cloth (linked to our liturgical season), prayers and religious objects linked to the time of the year. Please use this to pray together as a family.
What is it like to be a child in Year 1 at St Joseph's?
When a child comes into Year 1 they will be moving away from play based learning to more academic learning in the classroom. The children need to show resilience with their work and never give up even if its tricky at first! In year 1 we try and make learning fun by teaching fun and engaging lessons.
The children continue to grow in their faith by embedding Catholic Social Teaching in their daily lives. The children have shown they are Stewards of the Earth by doing a litter pick on the school field and doing things at home such as setting up bird feeders, recycling, eating plant based meals and looking after their gardens. We also have a display in our classroom where we show how the children are demonstrating all the Catholic Social Teaching Principles.
My hope for Year 1 is to inspire, excite, motivate and encourage children to become resilient, empathetic, confident and aspirational individuals who strive to be the best they can be. I have high expectations of the children to ensure they reach their full potential and want the children to have high expectations of themselves too. The children work incredibly hard throughout the day, following a similar timetable everyday. This includes Guided Reading, Maths, Phonics, Liturgical Prayer, Writing, Maths on Track and Topic Work.
The children in Year 1 are exposed to the teachings of Jesus through a range of subjects such as Religious Education, Relationships and Health Education (RHE), Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and GREAT DREAMs. We teach children how to love one another, show empathy to their peers and follow in Jesus' footsteps.
After the may half term, our fabulous Year 1 children will complete a phonics screening check. The phonics screening check is an assessment that helps to identify any gaps in your child's phonics skills. By supporting your child's reading, practicing the sounds and real and alien words and working closely with their teacher, you can help your child to succeed in the phonics screening check and to develop the skills they need to become confident readers. The test contains 40 words. Each child will sit one-to-one and read each word aloud to a teacher. The test will take approximately 10 minutes per child, although all children are different and will complete the check at their own pace. The list of words the children read is a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense words). This is nothing to worry about and the children see it as a game to say all the words correctly.
