Week beginning 12th May

Year 5 blog

We have had a great week this week, especially in Geography! We have been learning about volcanoes and it is fascinating! We made a 3D model of the volcano and wrote the different parts of the volcano inside so we knew how a volcano is structured. We explored the famous volcanoes and discovered that two of the volcanoes we were studying were actually erupting right now! We managed to find live footage of Mount Etna erupting which was absolutely fascinating!

In Maths, we did a mini SATs in solidarity with the Year 6's. Mrs Carr had sound questions on old SATs papers that tied in which what we had been learning for us to have a go at. We all were SO confident and ALL of us got 10/10!

In English, we have started our unit on Explanation texts. We have text marked and learned a text. We did a VCOP lesson about co-ordinating conjunctions. Our sticky knowledge for this is: FANBOYS- For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, SO!

In PE, we started our work on jumping. We did the normal standing jumping, but then we had a go at the triple jump. This confused us at first, so Mrs Carr found videos of top athletes in the Paris 2024 Olympics for us to watch. This made MUCH more sense and we are looking forward to having another go this week.

In RE, we have shown our understanding of faith and the Catholic principles of "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church". What really stuck with us was: Catholic means Universal and Jesus is for EVERYONE!

We can't believe it is the last week of term next week! See you then!

This (rather short) week was packed with fun and learning! We started with the NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe event, where we learned how to be resilient and empathetic. It was great to see everyone supporting each other and understanding the importance of speaking up. If you want to see the key message we learned, have a look on the School's facebook or Instagram page!

We also finished our adventure stories, and wow, they were fantastic! Everyone's creativity and confidence shone through in their writing. It's amazing to see how the children's high expectations can lead to such great work. Mrs Howells has read a few of them and also agreed how fantastic they are! Using sticky knowledge has really helped the children understand the essence of Adventure stories which has definitely contributed to the success!

In science, we explored thermal conductors and insulators. The children did some "cool" (!!) experiments to see how different materials handle heat. It was a bit challenging, but they showed resilience and learned a lot- including some surprises along the way!

We took our learning outside by planting wildflower seeds in our garden area. We're excited to see the flowers bloom and attract more wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, the children even found a toad and a bumblebee nest, which was super exciting!

The children can't wait to tell you all about next week!

Welcome back everyone!
Welcome to the strangest term I've ever experienced- only 3 weeks and 4 days! It is going to be an interesting term to try and fit everything in, but the children have come back energised and READY!!

Already, our REACH values are shining through. It is genuinely like these children have never been away! They have shown confidence and resilience in our Maths lessons with adding fractions to mixed number fractions. They have shown high expectations and aspirations in our English lessons with our VCOP and Big Write. And as ever, they are full of empathy for everyone around them.

We have lots of exciting things coming up in this short term so the children will be back writing the blog next week to report on all the fun things they have been up to!

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend!
