Week beginning 23rd June
Year 5 blog

In history, we have been learning about Benin. We have been looking at the famous bronzes and we had to make guesses about what they were showing. This was helping us learn how to be a historian!

On Thursday, we were able to have a sneaky peak of the Year 6 play. We can't spoil it for you but is WELL worth a watch! Tickets are on sale so please do go- we highly recommend it!

In Maths, we have been working out angles. We have been learning about angles on a straight line, angles around a point and angles in rectangles. On Thursday, we combined ALL our learning with reflex angles, perimeter and angles on a straight line. We have shown loads of confidence with this, and we are ready to move into our next topic!

In Science, we did an experiment on which things will dissolve. We now have got the challenge of separating the solution we have made next Science lesson!

On Thursday, we had a Zoom call with other schools and Daniel (National Geographic Explorer). Daniel showed us a video he had made called "Earth in 100 seconds". We discovered that urban areas cover 1% of the planet, deserts were 11%, forest are 11%, crops were 11% and cows were 33%! 1 second of the film = 1% of the coverage. It was really interesting and quite surprising.

See you next week!

Mrs Carr blog

We have had a busy week! However, towards the end of the week, we have slowed down a bit due to this really hot weather! It is really good to see all the children remembering sun hats and sun cream; so important in 30+ degrees!

The children have been working so hard with their knowledge of angles. We have learned how to use a protractor to measure angles, and we are now learning how to use a protractor to draw angles. The children's confidence is growing each day and it is wonderful to see.

In DT, we have been doing some really complicated CAMS designs. The children had to use a lot of resilience to make such complicated mechanisms. I look forward to how our CAM toys will work! It is certainly going to be an interesting design and make process!

In computing, this is where the confidence REALLY shines. We are doing Micro:bits and the ease at which the children can code and program these little computers is really inspiring! I love the empathy in the classroom too; they are always ready to help each other.

Yesterday, we had a little surprise! Gloucestershire County Council paid us a visit with their Theatre team to teach us about clean air. The key message we could apply to our school was: No car engines should be idling outside our school!
It was a really interactive performance and we really enjoyed ourselves!

See you next week for a much cooler week thankfully!

Year 5 blog

We have been enjoying the wonderful weather and have been spending loads of time in our garden area. We absolutely love being stewards of the Earth, and discovering bees nests, beetles, worms and other interesting invertebrates as we dig!
We have been growing: pumpkins, broad beans, onions, garlic, rhubarb, raspberries, wild flowers, carrots, climbing beans, spinach, tomatoes, salad leaves and dill! In the classroom, our cucumber plants have 3 cucumbers starting to form!
We are selling our produce for compost and seed money; parents have been really supportive of us- so a huge thank you!

In Maths we have been learning about angles. We have been using our sticky knowledge to estimate the size of angles and we are going to be learning how to use a protractor next week! We've already had a little play, but we can't wait to fully understand!

In English, we have been learning informal letters (an informal letter is a chatty letter). We have been writing about our school week and we have learned how to use semi colons and apostrophes for possession. We are showing loads of confidence with our letter writing!

Finally, on Wednesday, 4 of our class went to District Sports to represent our school. They showed amazing resilience, empathy, aspiration, confidence and high expectations all evening. It was a competitive evening and they represented us all really well! Well done!

We also had a visiting Head Teacher from SWR high school come to read us a story and invite us to visit their new football field when we are in Year 6. It was really nice to hear about what it is like going to Secondary School and has made us feel less scared!

See you next week!

Year 5 Blog

In Maths, we have been looking at area and perimeter. We have mainly been focusing on area and have been looking at strategies to understand how this works. We know that area is the space inside the shape, and we know that an array (dots in columns and rows) really illustrate that.

In English, we have been looking at an informal letter. An informal letter is a chatty letter! We were doing Kung Fu punctuation when we were retelling the letter because there were a lot of apostrophes! The Kung Fu punctuation helped us to remember where to put them!

In DT, we have started to plan a CAM project. We started off evaluating CAM toys and we LOVED seeing all the different designs. It really inspired us and we have some BIG aspirations now!

In History, we are looking at Benin. This is a bit of "secret" history and it isn't well covered normally. We were debating why it was important to study Benin and we decided that it was important to know about other Cultures that we have never heard of. It is also important because the Victorians destroyed their Civilisation which was really shocking to us. We linked it to our Catholic Social Teaching of Solidarity.

In computing, we have started learning about programming Micro:bits. We learned how to make them say things and play music, and light up with LED lights based on our code. We have to use a lot of resilience because the code doesn't always work first time.

Yesterday, we took delivery of new Bibles for KS2. This will really help us discover more about the Catholic Faith. Thank you to our MAT for providing these resources for us!

Today is our first transition day, where we get a taste of being in Year 6. Wish us luck!
