Summer Term 1 2025

Week beginning the 12th May 2025

This week, the children have been diving into the world of 3D sculpture making in Art. Using only paper, they have been exploring how to mold, shape, and transform it into feathers—taking inspiration from real ones they observed closely. With great resilience and creativity, they’ve been experimenting with different techniques to bring their ideas to life. These feathers are the first step in a larger project: creating their very own 3D birds!

In RE, we had a special and reflective session focused on Bubble Prayers. The children were invited to say a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to be their helper and guide. As they watched the bubbles float gently into the air, they offered their prayers to God, learning that even though we can't see Him, He hears every word. This activity helped the children connect with the virtue of faith, trusting in God’s presence and love. It also nurtured empathy, as they thought about others they might pray for and how the Holy Spirit can guide us to be kind and caring.

Week beginning the 5th May 2025

This week in Year 1, we’ve had a fantastic time exploring stories, seasons, and sports!

English:
In English, Year 1 explored the world of fables, focusing on the classic tale of The Tortoise and the Hare. The children enjoyed retelling the story in their own words, using expressive actions to help them remember key parts and bring the characters to life. Through this activity, they learned about the moral of the story and how fables often teach important life lessons in a fun and engaging way.

Geography:
In Geography, the children continued their learning about the seasons. They went on an exciting outdoor hunt around the field and school grounds to look for clues that could tell them which season we are currently in. They observed changes in nature, such as the weather, plants, and animals, and discussed how these signs might look different in other seasons. This hands-on experience helped deepen their understanding of seasonal changes and how they affect our environment.

PE (Physical Education):
During PE this week, Year 1 showed fantastic determination while working on their throwing and catching skills. They practiced both underarm and overarm techniques using a variety of equipment, including bean bags, tennis balls, and foam javelins. The children demonstrated great focus and teamwork, and it was wonderful to see their confidence and coordination improving with each session.

Week beginning the 28th April 2025

What a wonderful week to come back to! The sun has been shining down on us, and Year 1 have made the most of it with a fantastic start to the term. In PE, we’ve kicked off our multiskills sessions, where the children have been developing their coordination, balance, and teamwork through a variety of fun activities. In English, we wrapped up our learning on The Gingerbread Man—a story that truly captured the children’s imaginations. They loved retelling the tale and exploring the characters, and their enthusiasm really shone through in their work.

In Maths, Year 1 have been absolute stars! We’ve been focusing on addition and subtraction, and the children have impressed us with how quickly they’ve picked up new strategies and tips to solve equations. Their confidence is growing every day, and it’s been wonderful to see them applying their knowledge so independently.

In RE, we took time to reflect on all the Bible stories we’ve explored so far this year. I was amazed by how much the children remembered—they really wowed me with their knowledge and thoughtful insights. We also had a lovely discussion about prayer, talking about why it’s important and the kinds of things we like to think about when we pray to God. It was a calm and meaningful session that brought out some beautiful reflections from the children.

We’ve also been busy diving into our new Geography topic: Wonderful Weather! The children have been exploring the world around them through exciting fieldwork. We’ve been observing different types of birds, clouds, and plants, and we’ve started learning about temperature and how it changes with the seasons. It’s been a hands-on, curiosity-filled start to the topic, and we can’t wait to explore more in the coming weeks.
