Spring Term 1 (2024-2025)

Spring Term 1, Week 5

This week we have been exploring the ocean blue, and showing resilience and developing confidence in lots of our fine motor skills with our dioramas of ocean habits and sea life. The children were so excited about their creations, Miss Read brought St. Joseph’s Class in to see and hear all about their learning.  We loved how empathetic and engaged Year 1 were with our work, asking us lots of questions, allowing us to share our ideas and knowledge.

For RE we have been reflecting and sharing with faith how we can be kind and loving towards others, just as Jesus has called us to do, like he did.  We created HUGE art with material of a big red umbrella in the hall for us all be under, knowing that we can be aspirational with our love towards one another, showing kindness and knowing like Jesus we can include, welcome and look after everyone.

In celebration and recognition of Children’s Mental Health Week, we have enjoyed the focus of ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’ activities, creating art, sharing what us makes us special, and what we are good at, we are really do REACH in friendships, being the best we can be.

We have loved showcasing our skills and high expectations in gymnastics, developing the skills to do tuck rocks and forward rolls! We are so excited to continue our gymnastic journey after half term.

Spring Term 1, Week 4

We have arrived in the rainforest and have started creating beautiful pieces of mix media art demonstrating our very high expectations with our fine motor skills for using scissors safely. We cannot wait for to see them soon, along with some written work we have created for our new displays in the coming weeks.

Our Explorers topic is seeing us thrive with aspirational attitudes to our learning as we understand the world with enquiring minds through rain cloud experiments and creating rainforest inspired maps and mixed-media artwork.

During Outdoor Learning we are being empathetic to our wildlife, making bird feeders and exploring nature on our field.

In RE we have being learning out the love Jesus has for us all, and how he had faith to feed the crowds.  As learnt about this story, we made bread in the shape of fish.  Linked to our learning we enjoyed hearing the story of The Rainbow Fish and created our own clay rainbow fish.

Spring Term 1 Week 3

This week we have been working to confidently show we know that 5 can be made of; 4 and 1, 3 and 2.  We have been creating our own frog ponds to show this learning.

We have been loving our natural world, making bird feeders in Outdoor Learning with Mrs Piper.

We have been really resilient in our gymnastics lesson learning so much about how our bodies can move, and how we can make different shapes with them including, straight shapes, stars and tucks.

With faith we have focused on the pilgrim of hope for the jubilee and reflected on the actions of Jesus to welcome all, including children when he said “Let the children come.”

We have blown Mrs Daly away with our aspirational super sentence writing, writing about animals in the artic, and using adjectives to describe them.  Next week we will be exploring the rainforest and writing more amazing sentences.

Spring Term 1, Week 2

We have been busy historical explorers, learning about other aspirational explorers who have travelled over the seas, like Amelia Earhart, and through space, like Tim Peake and across snow and ice, like Felicity Aston. We have created posters about how they have inspired us, and what we learnt about them. Did you know Amelia Earhart was allowed to wear bloomers and liked catching rats?  Tim Peake’s love of adventure started at his local Scouts group? And Felicity Aston’s first hike was up a mountain at the age of 9? We have thought about the many ways these explorers have shown REACH values, never giving up and being the best they can be, just like us.

We have loved getting the attendance award in class this week, Mrs Daly was thrilled when she realised we would be getting it! Please remember learning begins at 8:50, the gates open at 8:40.

For our maths we have confidently been playing “fast eyes” games with our friends on the carpet and building cube tower cities, as well creating our own subitising dots for each other to label.

Whilst growing in Faith, Hope and Love, we have been attending Mass, and been reflecting on what it is like to give and receive gifts, and what the Wise Men brought when they met Jesus.

Spring Term 1: Week 1

Happy New Year! This week we have been confidently wishing visitors to St. Mary’s class a ‘Happy New Year”.  To coincide with this, we have created banners with hope for the New Year for our doors (school and home) as part of class prayers, blessing the classroom for the new year. We were very excited to present with Mrs Howells with hers, when she surprised us by being our Mystery Reader! Thank you Mrs Howells!

For RE our faith has been REACHing for the stars, as we focused on the journey the wise men made following the star to find the King of Kings – Jesus. We have been enjoying our role play area during our RE which is set up for our explorer topic and was just what we needed to act out the journey by the wise men. We also created constellation chalk pictures and set high expectations for ourselves to write words we thought the wise men would feel when they finally reached Jesus, with some empathetic responses.

With resilience we are working really hard at using our tripod grip in all our mark making and writing. We have loved exploring the ice and frost this week too.

We are all really excited for our EXPLORERS topic this term, and cannot wait to learn more, next week we will be learning about explorers past and present! If you are at a library over the weekend, you might like to look for books related to this topic to read with us at home.
