Summer Term 1 (2021-2022)

Summer 1, Week 4

'Beware of the Big Bad Fish' by Sheridan Cain and Tanya Linch

This week Reception have learned all about frogs! The children really enjoyed their focus text 'Beware of the Big Bad Fish' which taught them all about the life cycle of a frog. Reception enjoyed using tweezers in their 'Funky Fingers' activity, removing raisins from jelly! The children now know each stage of the life cycle of a frog and think that the 'froglet' stage is the best as it is a "tadpole with legs!"
Reception have worked so hard developing their knowledge of number bonds to 5 using our class rhyme, their fingers and numicon. The children are working so hard with this and getting more and more ready for Year One! They developed their gross motor skills through ball skills in PE this week. The children practiced rolling, bouncing, catching and throwing balls with accuracy and persevered and kept smiling, even when they found some skills a bit challenging!
Summer 1, Week 3

'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle

This week the children had a special delivery - tiny caterpillars! Reception were able to observe the caterpillars each day and watch them grow bigger and bigger! During topic lessons and independent learning time the children have learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly. The children know each stage of the cycle and are excited to observe these with the caterpillars in class! Reception took part in lots of caterpillar and butterfly related crafts such as paper chain caterpillars, chalk butterflies and stain glass window butterflies! Reception learned and performed a song 'There's a tiny egg asleep on a leaf' which told the life cycle of a butterfly through song.
The children listened to the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' again and discussed the healthy and unhealthy food in the story. They talked about the importance of eating healthy food to help their bodies grow big and strong. Using some of the fruit from the focus text, the children worked together to make fruit smoothies. They were very yummy!
Summer 1, Week 2

'The Bad Tempered Ladybird' by Eric Carle

This week the children explored the insect, Ladybirds. They looked at the book 'The Bad Tempered Ladybird' by Eric Carle and enjoyed trying to find ladybirds and other insects in the outdoor area. They have investigated the 'Minibeast Lab' roleplay area, learning lots of facts about minibeasts.
In Literacy this week the children have been writing the story of the Three Little Pigs and have even substituted the character to create their own story! Reception have continued to develop their number knowledge and are completing work independently. During outdoor learning the children enjoyed making ladybird houses using natural materials. They have printed ladybirds to add to the role play area and have coloured in ladybird sheets, counting how many spots each ladybird has!
As it is now the month of May, the children began thinking about Mary and praying the Rosary. The children were so respectful, holding their rosary beads and praying the 'Hail Mary' and 'Our Father' prayers.
